Hungarian lessons

All the Hungarian you need to know to have a real conversation. Seriously. In the pronounciation guide, imagine that "euh" is how a French person hesitates.

hello/szia - [hello/see-ya] - hi/bye; can be used interchangeably (not to be confused with "hallo", which is what you say when greeting someone on the phone)

jó - [yo] - good, ok; can punctuate a sentence in short bursts or be drawn out, much like in English

érdekes - [air-duh-kesh] - interesting

tök jó - [teuhk yo] - cool, awesome

király - [key-rye] - cool, awesome (it actually means "king")

igen - [eegen, like again with stress on the a] - yes; in actual usage repeat over and over again for the proper effect, so "igenigenigenigenigenigen"

köszi - [keuh-see] - thanks; short for köszönöm, "I thank you"

And now you can translate a sample half cell phone conversation as one might overhear daily on the bus: "Szia! ... Jó... jó... igenigenigenigenigen... tök jó, köszi, hello."

Congratulations, you now speak Hungarian.

Comments

A warning about tök jó - it's good in 90% of the country, but if you use it in Budapest you sound like an under-educated hick.
