New room.
Spent all day cleaning and moving into my new room.
Things that were left here by previous occupant(s): a playstation, an old tv, a vcr with remote control, an L-ruler thingy, a home-made anti-war poster, a large-size artist's clipboard with several pads, drafting materials, a left-handed golf club, a fishing pole, a computer monitor, a printer, two pairs of shoes, a cell phone, a handful of video games, a cordless phone/answering machine, a yogurt/ice cream maker, a cooler, a thawed package of mochi ice cream, as well as boxes from an i-mac and a 3-week French course on audio tape.
There were also little notes pasted up around the room, written (I'm assuming) by the previous occupant's girlfriend for him. On the light switch: "You light up my life", with a little drawing of a light bulb. On the inside of the closet door: "Hi Bean, we're getting married." Next to the bathtub: "Little Hansy, you're the [water smear]". On the medicine cabinet: "You are the best, yes you are."
I'd make a real poll, but comments are good enough. Should I have a desk or a sofa?

Sofa, no contest! :-)

I'd say sofa. Boring work themed places abound on campus should a desk substitute be needed. In your own space, however, a spot where all manner of visitors could engage in lounging, sprawling, sitting and flopping seems much more pleasant company to keep than a desk's spartan reminder of tasks not yet completed.
