Friday (the weekday series)
It's the little pleasures of a summer day in Berkeley.
Something I don't remember anymore... a big truck, footsteps in the hall, Hunter's motorcycle in the street... woke me up at 7:30 am. That makes every day this week that I was woken up before my alarm.
Class in the morning. Passive sentences (Das Buch wird gekauft.) and Genitiv (die Farbe des Buches).
Boring language tangent:
Long before we covered the genitive case in class, I was reading the word "des" as if it were in French without realizing: "das Tal des Todes" became "la vallée des morts". The almost-but-not-quite-correctness is somewhat disturbing.
[It should be "la vallée de la mort". The difference is between "death valley"/"the valley of death" and "the valley of the dead"/"the valley of deaths" (or is that "la vallée des décès"?). For those who don't speak French: 'des' is a contraction of de + les, where 'de' means 'of' and 'les' is the definite plural article (the). For those who don't speak German: des is the form of the definite masculine/neuter article (the) in the genitive case, which indicates possession (in English, "of the", or word + 's).]
Similar thing happened between the words 'dazu' and 'là-dessus' spoken aloud. They sound similar: "da-tsou" verus "la-dsu", and in unconscious translation "Gibt es Fragen dazu?" became "Questions là-dessus?". Odd.
End boring language tangent.
This afternoon as I walked up the hill to Ridge, I encountered Hunter eating a mango on the recycle bins parked at the curb, watching over a shiny new red Ford Mustang convertible.
The weather was beautiful and clear out, warm enough to be lovely, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable. Spent an hour napping in the sun on Memorial Glade, and woke up to the chatting of a group of students who were picknicking at the tree just below mine about south-east asian studies and wearing sunglasses to an arranged marriage.
Walked back to Ridge and discovered a treasure trove of free catered food in our kitchen, leftover from some biology symposium on campus. Dolmas, pepperocinis, spicy feta dip, mashed potatoes, some sort of scalloped potatoes and eggplant dish.
Wandered through all the teen-fashion and vintage stores on Telegraph looking for a rhinestone necklace. I finally bought one from Mars, but in the end I think I should have gone gaudier to match the dress. Oh well.
At Moe's, found a pocket German-English dictionary for $3 and a used copy of Vol de Nuit for $5. I hesitated on a German-English reader (why have I never heard of these for French?) and a handful of used Asterixes.
Party tonight, and ball tomorrow. Life is good.
