Spartan Marching Band Wins Top Awards in Competition

October, 2007

The Mountain View Spartan Marching Band took home ten awards at the Foothill Band Review in Pleasanton on October 27, including two top sweepstakes awards for colorguard and drum major for their field show, "Serengeti."

59 bands from Northern California and Reno, Nevada, competed in the event, which included both parade and field show competitions. Mountain View's field show received six awards, including the top Field Show Colorguard Sweepstakes award and Parade and Field Show Drum Major Sweepstakes award for drum major Jeff Chiang, as well as first place for field show drum major, third place for Field Show Class 1 and for woodwinds, and fourth place for percussion and brass. The group garnered three awards in the parade competition: second place for parade drum major (open class), third place for parade colorguard class AA, and fifth place for parade class AA.

All awards were met by the 200-plus band members with equal glee. "I think we're the only band that screams for all prizes, no matter what we get," said Delphine Wartell, a sophomore and trombone player, commenting on the enthusiastic cheers as each award was announced.

On October 13, the band also took home six awards from the Cupertino Tournament of Bands competition, including first place for parade drum major (open class) and for field show drum major, first place for field show brass, and second place awards for field show class 1, field show auxiliary, and parade class D.

The band's next competition is November 3 at the Grape Bowl Festival in Lodi, California.
